FABRICS 101 (PART 2) | UPHOLSTERY FABRICS GUIDE

In Fabrics 101 Part 1, we explored the five popular types of upholstered fabrics. Beyond these basic fibers, combining materials and using creative weaving techniques gives rise to even more diverse and unique fabric options. Let 𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗘 take you further into the world of upholstered fabrics!

1. Bouclé Tweed

Bouclé Tweed is famously known as the signature material of Chanel's fashion pieces dating back to 1924. However, not everyone knows that it can also be used as upholstery fabric, offering softness and warmth.

“Tweed” refers to a range of diagonal weaving techniques, with eight distinct styles. These techniques can be applied to various fibers like silk or linen, producing light and airy fabrics.

When Bouclé and Tweed are combined, they create a fresh and versatile material. The fabric has a slightly textured surface while remaining sturdy and durable. Additionally, it is wrinkle-resistant, water-repellent, and holds its natural shape effortlessly. Maintenance is straightforward, as it rarely needs washing or ironing.

2. Chunky Basketweave

Unlike Tweed, “Basketweave” is a weaving technique derived from burlap or wicker patterns. This method creates a checkerboard-like structure with interwoven horizontal and vertical threads, enhancing the fabric’s durability.

The term “Chunky” suggests thickness and heft. As the name implies, Chunky Basketweave fabrics are robust and durable. However, their surface is not rough or coarse; instead, they feel soft and cozy to the touch.

As upholstery, Chunky Basketweave works exceptionally well with boxy sofas featuring clean, straight lines. Its high durability makes it easy to clean and maintain, making it a fantastic choice for families with kids or pets.

3. Bouclé Basketweave

The Basketweave technique pairs beautifully with Bouclé yarns. This combination blends the strength of Basketweave with the soft and plush texture of Bouclé. The result is a fabric that is both durable and comfortable, making it ideal four various designs—from elegant curved chairs to minimalist straight-line furniture.

4. Chenille Bouclé

Chenille Bouclé is one of the most unique upholstery fabrics, combining two highly popular materials. It inherits Bouclé’s signature textured and soft qualities, along with Chenille’s subtle sheen and durability.
